La Belgique est aux avant-postes dans la course à l’exploitation minière en eaux profondes. Une société privée implantée en Flandre, Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR), filiale du groupe DEME, développe un robot destiné à récolter les nodules polymétalliques, avec le « parrainage » de l’Etat belge. La Belgique qui, dans le même temps, se positionne comme « Blue Leader », en défendant la protection de 30 % de l’océan d’ici 2030 et l’établissement d’un nouveau traité ambitieux pour la protection de la biodiversité. Une nouvelle frontière dans l’extraction sera-t-elle bientôt franchie ? Les grands fonds marins contiennent des minerais, mais faut-il les prélever ? A quel prix ? Avec quels impacts sur les écosystèmes ? Au service de quelle activité industrielle en devenir ? Imagine s’est immergé dans ce secteur encore peu connu qui soulève pourtant nombre de questions au niveau scientifique, juridique et économique. Pratique ancestrale, le glanage reprend en Wallonie.
